Vikings Draw with Kennedy
(12/14/16) The Viking Varsity team had to settle for another draw today against non-conference opponent Kennedy High School. It was a physical battle by both sides that resulted in a low scoring 1-1 finish. The Vikings struck first with a first half goal by Erika Sosa. Sosa received a pass from her favorite teammate and sister Ofelia "O" Sosa-Cruz. Erika then dribbled against the grain of the defense to face the goal head on and delivered a strike to the lower left third of the goal. The 1-0 score nearly held thanks to the young but stalwort Marina defense. Unfortunately a debatable referee call resulted in the awarding of a penalty kick to the Kennedy side. The PK was converted and Marina was denied the victory and had to settle for the draw.
Vikings Tie St. Joseph
(12/12/2016) The Marina Lady Vikings Varsity soccer team played to a 1-1 stalemate against St. Joseph High School today in non-league action. Despite being down several players to injury and encountering more injuries during the St. Joseph match, the Lady Vikings were able to claw back and score late in the second half to notch the game at 1-1. The first half saw a classic physical battle of back and forth soccer on the small-sized St. Joseph field. Both teams had several chances and each put shots on goal as well as other shots that just missed and sailed by the pipes. Midway through the second half the Jesters struck first with a straight away shot from 16 yards into the right lower third of the goal. The Lady Vikings showed heart as they battled back the remainder of the game. Finally with less than 5 minutes left in the game, a pass from a Viking defender found midfielder Erika Sosa up the middle of the field about 30 yards from goal. Sosa dribbled forward and beat her defender as she entered the penalty area. Before she could get a shot off, a second St. Joseph defender creamed her in the box as Sosa went down hard. In the scramble for the ball, Reese Rosas was able to get off a left-footed toe poke that found its way past the Jester goalkeeper for the equalizer. The Vikings next take on Kennedy HS on Wednesday 12/14 at Marina.

* Denotes Sunset League Match
Vikings Over Barons
(1/31/17) The Vikings outlasted the Fountain Valley High School Barons today in Sunset League action with a 1-0 victory. The Viking team, hampered by injuries and sickness, still managed to muster enough for the victory. The entire first half was a back and forth dance with each team testing out the other. There were several battles all over the field for possession and control, but those situations did not translate into many first half scoring chances. The first half ended in a sleepy 0-0 duel. In the 12th minute of the second half, the Viking's Rachel Avila controlled the ball and dribbled just into the left side of the penalty area. She was met with a fierce tackle from a Baron defender that sent her into the turf face first in a scorpion tumble. Marina was awarded a penalty kick. A determined Avila recovered her composure, wiped the grass stain from her face, and converted the PK for the 1-0 victory.
Vikings Dismantle Barons
(1/10/17) The Vikings Frosh team easily worked over the Fountain Valley High School Barons today winning 4-0 in Sunset League action. The Vikings had a pair of goals each half with the first goal started by an open field dribble and through pass from Megan Hines to Halle Polich who delivered a strike into the left side netting. The Vikings second goal came when Reese Rosas won a ball about 40 yards out from goal. She then delivered a through pass by the back line defense to Ivy McNeil who crushed a strike on goal that was deflected by the Baron goalkeeper right to an oncoming Kassidy Carmen for the finish. In the 20th minute of the second half Rosas used some ball trickery to beat a couple of defenders in a run towards goal. She was fouled by the last defender which set up a free kick from 20 yds that was converted by Gracie Frasier. Ten minutes later Rachel Avila dribbled into the box where she also was fouled on a take down in the penalty area. Avila recovered her composure and jammed home a Penalty Kick for the Vikings final goal.
Shark Cup Champs
(12/23/16) The Viking All-Frosh team claimed the 2016-2017 Sharks Cup Frosh/Soph trophy today in Corona. The tournament host Santiago HS Sharks, on their own turf, battled the visiting mighty Vikings through a scoreless double overtime tie of 0-0. The defensive battle saw several scoring opportunities by both teams turned away by the staunch defensive back line efforts as well as the stellar play of both goal keepers. Viking Goal Keeper Carly Miles delivered several key game-saving stops during the match and allowed the contest to proceed to penalty kicks where she again came up big with 3 saves. The Vikings won the match in penalty kicks 5-4 with successful PK's by Reese Rosas, Olivia Weinstock, Halle Polich, Gracie Frasier, and Jonah Vu. The Viking team delivered an awesome tournament performance outscoring their opponents 11-1 over the three day affair with victories over Vista Murrieta HS (7-0), Centennial HS (2-0), and a Semi-final 2-1 victory over Roosevelt HS. The successful tournament moved the Viking record to 9 wins and 4 losses for the pre-season and provides nice momentum as the team enters league play after the holiday break.
