Vikings Drop Finale to Newport
(2/13/14) The Vikings were on the road today against the Sailors of Newport Harbor in their final league game. The contest again started off on the wrong foot as an early goal was surrendered to the Sailors. Marina tried desperately to fight back to get back into the game but luck was not on our side today. Several attempts at goal went high or wide and a few shots rattled the pipes. It wasn't meant to be however, as the Viking attempts just could not find the back of the net on this day. Today's game marked the completion of the 2013-2014 season. We would like to thank our School, School officials, booster club, coaching staff, and our community for this year's encouragement and support.
Senior's Final Home Game
(2/11/14) The Lady Vikings hosted the Fountain Valley Barons for their final home game of the season in which the team's five Seniors were honored. It was not the start the Vikings hoped for as the Barons scored quickly in the game's initial minutes on a ball placed behind the defense. The Vikings battled back however. Senior Megan Finney then ran across the front of the goal from left to right about 15 yards out where she received a pass. As she continued moving to the right she was able to deliver a well placed shot across her body and inside the left post to even it up at one apiece. In the final 15 minutes of the game the Vikings seemed destined to win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. The momentum was clearly shifted to the Vikings who placed several shots on goal in the final minutes. However, the net went undisturbed and game ended in a 1-1 tie. After the game, Coach Llorente and the team honored the five graduating Seniors in front of the Marina Viking faithful by thanking them for their service and sending them off with best wishes for success. We all congratulate Seniors Madison Fitzpatrick, Morgan Kelly, Megan Finney, Kayla Perry, and Regina Rosas. Good luck to all of you!
Vikings Tie Huntington
(2/6/14) The Vikings entered the contest with an eye on a win in order to get back into the playoff picture. The Vikings came out strong against the Oilers repelling their attacks and moving the ball well up the field. The aggressive start resulted in an early first half goal by Nicole Salazar for the 1-0 lead which was kept until halftime. The second half saw the Huntington squad gain momentum as they started to push more people forward in hopes of getting an equalizer. About midway through the second half the Oilers sent a corner kick into the box. The ensuing scrum resulted in a couple of shots on goal of which the second went in to tie the match. The Vikings mounted a few challenges on goal in the remaining minutes but could not come up with the game winner and had to walk away with a 1-1 tie.
Lady Vikings Soccer Signs Four
(2/5/14) Four past and present Marina High School Girls Soccer program seniors signed National Letters of Intent today to continue their soccer careers with four year universities. Left to right: Megan Finney (Louisiana State University - Alexandria), Kayla Perry (University of North Carolina - Greensboro), Regina Rosas (Regis University - Denver), and Sami Swanson (Point Loma Nazarene). Congratulations to all of them!
Vikings Drop One to Los Al
(2/4/14) The Lady Vikings had a tough day at the office losing to the Griffens by a score of 0-4. The deficit was the largest all season as the Vikings just could not get anything going the entire game. The match was very physical and at times just out of control with yellow cards being issued. The referees allowed a style of play on the field that just did not suit the Vikings game of skill and speed. The Vikings will look to turn it around in their final 3 upcoming league games.
Marina Ties in Edison Re-Match
(1/30/14) A very motivated Edison team hosted the Marina Lady Vikings with hopes of paying back Marina for a loss in their first Sunset league match. In that first match Marina handed Edison the only Sunset league blemish against the Charger's 4-1-0 first place record. The game was intense from the beginning as the Chargers applied and sustained pressure through the entire first half putting Marina on their heels the entire 40 minutes and issuing several tests against the Viking defense. The second half the Vikings got more aggressive and did a much better job of cutting off the Edison passing angles. Marina changed the game momentum midway through the second half but could not capitalize. Each team had very few scoring opportunities the second half with Edison having an advantage in free kick scoring chances granted by the referee. Marina's best chance to score was actually in the 82nd minute of stoppage time when a Marina one on one strike on goal sailed over the top of the crossbar as the Edison Goalkeeper came out to challenge the shot. The Vikings had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Edison in this rematch.
Opportunity Lost: Marina Ties Newport Harbor
(1/28/14) Marina entered the Newport Harbor game in hopes of securing a win against the last place Mariners and moving up in the Sunset League standings. Unfortuantely the Lady Vikings could not deliver the win in a very flat performance. The game was a dull back and forth contest with very few shots on goal from either team. The Lady Vikings just could not get anything going in this match on this particular day and had to accept the 0-0 tie.
Marina Outplays Barons But Tie
(1/20/14) The Lady Vikings dueled to a 0-0 tie today against the Fountain Valley HS Barons. The game was back and forth the entire contest and Marina was able to fight off the attack of a physical Baron team. Marina led the match in scoring opportunities with part of that coming from several Baron fouls. Unforturnately some of the Marina opportunites were squandered and others just could not be converted. Marina led in most categories including shots on goal, possession, and set piece opportunities to score, but unfortunately could not deliver the win this time.
Lady Vikings Tie Los Alamitos
(1/14/14) The Lady Vikings fought off the Los Alamitos Griffins to a 0-0 tie in today's home contest. The Viking central defense and goalkeeping stood tall the entire match and repelled the constant Griffin attack for the entire 80 minutes. Aside from a couple of earned corner kicks, Marina never really put together many meaningful scoring opportunities against the stout Griffin defense. Fortunately however, the Viking defense stepped up and continued to battle toe to toe against the aggressive eagle heads to earn the half victory.
Marina Unplugs Chargers
(1/9/14) The Lady Vikings electrified the home crowd with a 2-1 victory over the Edison Chargers in their Sunset League season opener. Senior Kayla Perry opened the game's initial minutes with a textbook finish on goal that shocked the Chargers and rattled them enough to elevate the intensity of the remainder of the match. As Edison racheted up their attack, the Marina defense came under a storm of Charger shots and opportunities. Edison finally equaled with a goal of their own with about a minute remaining in the first half. An early second half Marina foul in the box gave the Chargers a PK opportunity and a chance to take the lead. That opportunity was erased by a great save from goalkeeper Kaitlen Esparza. Midway through the second half it would be #23 (Perry) again who delivered a strike from 25 yards for the tie-breaking goal. The Marina defense then stepped up to tame the Charger attack in the frenzied final 20 minutes for the sweet victory.
Marina Finalist in NOC Classic
(12/28/13) Marina made a respectable run in this weekends North Orange County Classic by advancing to the Pool Final on Saturday. Friday's pool round games included a 0-0 tie against Cal HS and a 1-0 win over Arroyo Grande HS which set up a semi-final match on Saturday morning against Downey HS. In the semi-final Marina jumped out early to a 1-0 lead and fought most of the game until surrendering a late goal in the second half to end the game in a 1-1 tie. In dramatic fashion the Lady Vikings advanced to the final with a Penalty Kick victory over Downey. The pool championship final matched Marina against the county's new number one ranked team Sunny Hills HS. Marina held their own the entire game but just could not muster up a goal against the Sunny Hills defense and had to settle for 2nd place with a 0-1 loss. What a great showing for the Lady Vikings!
Stoppage Time Victory over University HS
(12/19/13) The Lady Vikings pulled out a thrilling final seconds victory over University HS today. Marina stood firm against a physical Trojan team and battled the wet field conditions taking a 2-1 lead into the half on goals by Nicolette Slender and Nicole Salazar. The Trojans came out even more aggressive in the 2nd half and seized the momentum while the Vikings fought hard to retain their lead. As the game got into the final minutes of regulation, it became very frantic and the Trojans scored a heart-breaking equalizer with 30 seconds left in regulation. For some unknown reason the referee allowed the game to proceed past the 80 minute mark and Rachel Slender took advantage and provided the game winner at 2:37 into stoppage time for the heroic 3-2 victory.
Marina Fights Back to Tie Estancia
(12/16/13) A high scoring game that seemed to be over after 20 minutes. Estancia capitalized early in the game on a Marina team that just played 5 games in 7 days. With a 2-0 halftime lead, Estancia looked to be in control of the match before one of our seniors, Megan Finney, took the game over. Finney scored just minutes into the second half with a well hit volley into the side netting and Abbi Swanson tied it minutes later with a clinical finish after beating her defender, With 12 minutes to go, Marina committed a costly foul inside the box which gave Estancia the lead again off of a pk conversion. Not to be out done, Marina fought back again with it's third goal off of a solidly struck header from the game's MVP, Megan Finney, off a corner kick. After being down twice, Marina showed great tenacity and fought hard for a well deserved 3-3 tie at home.
No Luck in Aliso Cup Loss
(12/14/13) The Lady Vikings had quite the dominant performance against Palos Verdes but the game of soccer isn't always won by the team who creates the most chances. Marina out-shot and controlled the game against the Sea Kings but couldn't find the back of the net. A goal scored by PV in the opening minutes of the match proved to be the difference. Marina has played a staggering 5 games in 6 days so a much deserved rest is on deck with a tough match against Estancia next on the schedule.
PK Quarterfinal Loss to Poly
(12/14/13) Marina struck first early in the game with a beautifully hit volley from Bri Mojica that dipped over the keeper's head from 20 yards out. With Poly equalizing minutes into the second half, the Lady Vikings sat deep in their zone and looked for the counter attack goal. With neither team able to finish the opportunities that presented themselves, the game ended in a 1-1 tie that went straight to a penalty kick shoot-out to determine the winner. While Marina slotted it's first two pk's home and our keeper Emma Walker, put us up one with a great save, we unfortunately missed our next two and Poly came out on top with a final PK score of 4-2. Poly then went on to win their next two games and win the President's division.
Marina Outlasts Woodbridge 2-1
(12/12/13) The Marina Girls Varsity Soccer team defeated the Woodbridge High School Warriors today 2-1 with a pair of second half goals by Nicole Salazar. The first half of the match was evenly fought to a 0-0 score at halftime. The determined Lady Vikings then came out of the break and struck first with the games initial goal. Unfortunately the Warriors came right back with an equalizing goal of their own within a few short minutes. As the momentum of the game seemed to be shifting in the Warriors favor, Marina suddenly capitalized on a Woodbridge turnover coupled with a nice pass behind the defense and a one on one finish by Salazar for the game winner. The Vikings then successfully ran off the last 12 minutes of the game to hold on to the 2-1 victory. Congratulations to the squad for another victory in front of the home crowd!
Marina Falls to No. 1 Ranked Aliso
(12/10/13) The Marina Girls Varsity team surrendered a couple of goals to the visiting Aliso Niguel High School today in Aliso Cup action. The two goals were all that the number one ranked Wolverines needed to complete their 2-0 win over the Vikings. Despite the 2 goal deficit, the Lady Vikings continued to hold their own and kept the game competitive. The Viking squad continued to battle the entire match but eventually came up empty-handed against the stingy Wolverine defense. Aliso Cup action will continue for the Vikings this weekend.
Marina Opens Aliso Cup Play
(12/9/13) The Marina Girls Soccer Varsity team entered play today in the Ninth Annual Aliso Cup soccer tournament. The tournament annually features some of the best teams in Orange and the surrounding counties. The Marina squad traveled to Martin Luther King HS to take on the Wolfs Pride in the first match of the tourney. Marina continued it's shutout streak with a dominant performance on a very cold night in Riverside against King High. After being tied 0-0 at half, the Lady Vikings finally saw their possession-based brand of soccer pay off with a quality goal by their only freshman, Rachel Slender. Following Rachel's goal, the floodgates opened up and the Lady Vikings poured in 3 more goals in the next 15 minutes for a commanding 4-0 win. Leanna Yescas finished with two goals and Kelsy Bustillos slotted in another.

| Marina Records Another Shutout
(12/5/13) Marina Varsity recorded a 2-0 victory today against Segerstrom HS. Early goals from Kayla Perry and Leanna Yescas led Marina to it's 2nd victory in as many games to start the preseason. A stout defense has led the Vikings to clean sheets in both of their opening matches. With the passing becoming more consistent and the chemistry continuing to build, the Vikings head into a very busy week with three or four games in the Aliso Cup and a preseason match against Woodbridge. Good luck Vikings!

| Marina Sweeps Ocean View
(12/3/13) It was a very successful day for the Marina High School Girls Soccer Program with all three teams recording victories over the visiting Ocean View SeaHawks. It was a solid opening day performance by the Varsity team. With a number of new varsity players blending in seamlessly with the returners, the team gained advantage of the game early with possession and quality opportunities. Defensively they kept a high line and applied consistent pressure to create turnovers which ultimately resulted in our first win of the year with a commanding 3-0 victory. Congratulations to all three squads!

Woodbridge No Match for Marina JV
(12/12/13) Possession was easy to come by and an aggressive Woodbridge back line left many opportunities for our outside mids to create chances. We had the opposing midfield run ragged and opportunities fell at our feet. Four different scorers accounted for our 5 goals in this one.
Goals- Ofelia(2), Hannah(1), Nicole C(1), Nicole F(1)
Assists- Markie(2), Edee(1), Caroleena(1), Baylie(1)
JV Dominates King High 3-0
(12/9/13) Playing on the road on Monday following the weekends games, our team came out strong and created many chances early in this one. Ofelia started the scoring with a shot from outside the box just under the bar. Marina dominated possession and though we were not clinical within the 18, 3 goals from outside it kept the game always in our favor.
Goals- Ofelia(1), Caroleena(1), Maddie(1)
Assists-Alexis(1), Markie(1), Tiani(1)
JV Beats Millikan in Ocean View Tourney
(12/7/13) In our 2nd game of the day working on tired and cold legs, we played a well rested Millikan(JV) team. Both teams were capable of moving the ball on the ground but tight defenses made it hard to create quality looks for either side. An inside curled shot from the top of the box created the separation on the scored bored and midway through the 2nd half we packed in the midfield and minimized threats till the game was done.
Goals- Ofelia(1)
Assists- Alexis(1)
Marina JV Blanks Ocean View Varsity
(12/7/13) Playing the Ocean View Varsity in their own tournament we jumped out on them early. The 1st half had Marina dominating the possession in the rain and creating quality looks. Ofelia scored the first and set up the 2nd on a beautiful low cross to the crashing Sarah Cook. We tightened up defensively in the 2nd half as referees and the playing surface made it hard to keep a passing game active. We were able to finish with a solid 2-0 victory over the Ocean View varsity squad.
Goals- Ofelia(1), Sarah(1)
Assists-Markie(1), Ofelia(1)
Marina JV Win in Close Match vs. Segerstrom
(12/5/13) In a tightly contested game played on the F/S field, we struggled to control touches and develop a rhythm moving the ball. We created the better of the opportunities but the game was never safe. The referees were very involved with so much commotion from every call coming from the opposing sideline, and 3 cards were handed out in response. Strong performances from our back line players kept Segerstrom at bay while a first half goal by Ofelia set up by Markie decided the 1-0 victory.
Goals- Ofelia(1)
Assists- Markie(1)
Marina JV Steam Rolls Ocean View
(12/3/13) The game saw us score early off a corner kick which was then followed by many more. Our Marina Girls dominated possession and chances while the Ocean View team could barely create any opportunities. Our team connected a high percentage of our passes and defensively were sound and skillfully walked to a 7-0 vcitory.
Goals- Ofelia(3),Edee (1), Hannah(1), Riley(1), Alexis(1),
Assists-Markie(4), Edee(1), Hannah(1)
